During this liminal week I’m coasting on what festive spirit hasn’t been depleted by the continuously rising temps here in New York before surrendering it completely to the dogged resolution campaigns of January. If I weren’t throwing a little party, cooking up an intense lasagna bolognese on New Year’s Eve (or celebrating Korean-style, with tteokguk, on New Year’s day), I’d be at Metrograph catching the incredible, and incredibly rare, STRANGE DAYS (Ralph Fiennes! Angela Bassett! Juliette Lewis!). Here’s to hoping the restoration gods issue a pristine blu-ray in 2023.
I don’t like much like best of year lists, since I don’t always see every new release (in a botched attempt to soak in the merry, movie magic via The Fabelman’s with my family, the lights didn’t failed to turn off—during the trailers, the production credits, and the first ten minutes, during which I scrambled trying to find an employee in this empty upstate theater) but I did contribute to Screen Slate’s best of 2022 as well as Mubi’s Fantasy Double Feature poll, a favorite of mine. Ask me in a few months and I’ll have a more thorough answer after playing catch-up.
In the meantime, here’s a perfunctory list of some of the things covered on moviepudding this year.
